Schedule Details
Day 1: Arrival
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you'll be greeted by a representative from Machokodo Tanzania Tours and transferred to your hotel. The hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, including superb rooms, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. Later in the evening, our managers will hold a briefing to ensure you're well-prepared for the climb.
For private tour packages, shared airport transfers are included for your group, but extra charges may apply for individual transfers. To avoid additional costs, it's recommended to coordinate your group's arrival and departure times.
Day 2: Trekking from Marangu gate to Mandara Hut
In the morning, a guide and mountain support team will meet you at the hotel for a quick briefing. Afterwards, you'll travel by vehicle to the eastern entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park, known as Marangu Gate (1,860 m/6102 f). Once there, you'll complete the necessary formalities for climbing permits and search and rescue registration before beginning the trek to Mandara Hut (2,720 m /8,922 f). The trek passes through the rainforest, where tropical showers are common, so it's advisable to bring spare clothes and raincoats. Upon reaching the camp, the mountain support crew will attend to your needs and prepare lunch.
Throughout the Marangu route, accommodations are provided in special huts, offering a comfortable alternative to camping.
Please note: This will be your first day at this altitude, so it's important to follow these instructions:
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine
- Drink at least 4 liters of bottled water daily, in small, frequent intervals
- Consider using high-altitude aid medicine to alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Our managers will provide more details along with your itinerary, but we recommend consulting your doctor beforehand regarding any allergies or health concerns.
At night, you may experience discomfort due to acclimatization to the high altitude. Reduced oxygen intake during sleep may lead to symptoms such as headaches. Pay attention to your body and inform your guide of any signs of altitude sickness.
Day 3: Trekking from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
The group will rise early for a hearty breakfast before setting out from Mandara Hut towards the second high-altitude camp: Horombo Hut (3,720 m/12,202 f). Upon reaching the camp, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of both the Kibo and Mawenzi volcanoes.
After lunch, you'll embark on an acclimatization hike towards Kibo Hut, ascending 200 meters (656 feet) in altitude before returning to Horombo Hut for dinner.
Please note: The acclimatization hike is a gentle trek with a slight gain in altitude aimed at facilitating acclimatization. It's essential to take these hikes seriously, as they improve your chances of successfully reaching Kilimanjaro's summit and help prevent altitude sickness.
Day 4: Trekking from Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
After breakfast, the group will trek to Kibo Hut (4,720 m/15,482 f). The trek itself isn't overly challenging, but it's important to maintain a suitable pace to conserve energy for the climb to Kilimanjaro's summit. Upon arrival at the camp, lunch will be served, followed by a recommendation to rest as much as possible, avoid strenuous activities, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Day 5: Trekking to Uhuru Peak and returning to Horombo Hut
Your group will set out from Kibo Hut (4,720 m /15,482 f) during the night and begin the trek to Kilimanjaro's summit, Uhuru Peak (5,895 m /19,336 f). While the trek itself is not particularly difficult in terms of technicality, the high altitude poses a challenge, making even regular physical activity feel strenuous. Throughout the entire summit trek, each pair of climbers will be accompanied by their own guide, who will monitor their stamina and mental well-being. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you have the option to descend to the nearest glacier if desired. Afterward, you'll return to Kibo Camp for a two-hour rest before continuing your descent to Horombo Hut (3,720 m/12,202 f).
Please note: It's important to remember that the majority of accidents, including most broken limbs, occur during the descent. Pay close attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of damaging your toenails.
Day 6: Descending from Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate
Your team will set out from Barafu Camp during the night to begin the final ascent to Uhuru Peak (5,895 meters / 19,336 feet). While technically straightforward, the climb is made challenging by the high altitude, which can make even regular physical exertion feel strenuous. To ensure your safety and well-being, each pair of climbers will be accompanied by a personal guide throughout the ascent to monitor their physical and mental state. Upon successfully reaching Uhuru Peak, you have the option to descend to the nearest glacier before returning to Barafu Camp. Here, you'll have a 2-hour rest period before continuing your descent to Millennium Camp.
Please note: It's important to remember that the majority of accidents, including most broken limbs, occur during the descent. Pay close attention to your feet, as there is a high risk of toenail damage.
Day 7: Departure
