Overview

The Lemosho route has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. It boasts stunning views, excellent acclimatization conditions, and some of the highest success rates for reaching the summit. Beginning on the western side of Kilimanjaro, the Lemosho route offers three different itineraries ranging from 6 to 8 days. One of its highlights is Cathedral Peak, situated at an impressive 3872 meters, which provides breathtaking views and serves as a great spot for acclimatization hikes. Another unique feature of Lemosho is the presence of Dendrosenecio kilimanjaro, large alien-like plants found exclusively on this mountain.

Schedule Details

Day 1: Arrival

Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO), you'll be greeted by a representative from Machokodo Tanzania Tours and transferred to your hotel. The hotel offers everything you need for a comfortable stay, including superb rooms, friendly staff, a swimming pool, and Internet access. Later in the evening, our managers will hold a briefing to ensure you're well-prepared for the climb.

For private tour packages, shared airport transfers are included for your group, but extra charges may apply for individual transfers. To avoid additional costs, it's recommended to coordinate your group's arrival and departure times.

Day 2: Climbing to Shira 2 Camp

Today you'll then begin a  journey of roughly 3–4 hours by vehicle to Kilimanjaro National Park's western entrance, Londorossi Gate. After obtaining climbing permits and registering with the search and rescue service, the group will continue upwards in off-road vehicles to a drop-off point at 3,610 meters (11,841 feet). Here, you'll be treated to stunning views of the Shira Plateau.

The route from the drop-off point to the first high-altitude camp, Shira 2, involves a moderate gain in altitude and is not overly physically demanding, allowing for proper acclimatization. Upon arrival at the camp, our professional mountain crew will have already set up tents and started preparing dinner.

Please note: This will be your first day at this altitude, so it's important to follow these instructions:

  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine
  •  Drink at least 4 liters of bottled water daily, in small, frequent intervals
  • Consider using high-altitude aid medicine to alleviate symptoms of altitude sickness. Our managers will provide more details along with your itinerary, but we recommend consulting your doctor beforehand regarding any allergies or health concerns.

At night, you may experience discomfort due to acclimatization to the high altitude. Reduced oxygen intake during sleep may lead to symptoms such as headaches. Pay attention to your body and inform your guide of any signs of altitude sickness.

Day 3: Trekking from Shira 2 Camp to the Lava tower and descent to Barranco camp

After breakfast, you'll depart from Shira 2 Camp and begin your trek towards the pivotal point of the route: the lava tower. This segment of the trail involves numerous ascents and descents, leading to a campsite situated at an altitude of over 4,600 meters (15,091 feet). Parts of the journey may pose challenges, and discomfort is common. However, spending at least 1–2 hours at this altitude is crucial for acclimatization, making it the perfect spot for lunch.

Later, you'll descend to Barranco Camp, where you'll encounter the iconic Barranco Wall. While it may seem imposing due to its sheer size and steepness, rest assured that climbing it the following day will be straightforward, as it features a relatively simple hiking trail.

Day 4: Trekking from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

On this day, you'll wake up early and enjoy a hearty breakfast before embarking on the ascent of Barranco Wall. It's advisable to leave camp as early as possible to avoid crowds from other groups, which can impede progress. The climb up the gorge wall is relatively straightforward and typically takes about an hour. Following the ascent, you'll have the opportunity to rest and capture photos against the backdrop of Kibo volcano.

Afterwards, you'll begin a more challenging hike to Karanga Camp, characterized by various ascents and descents along the route. However, rest assured that our guides are adept at setting an appropriate pace for the group. Upon reaching the camp, a warm lunch will be provided. Later in the day, you'll embark on an acclimatization hike towards Barafu Camp, ascending 300 meters (984 feet) in altitude before descending back to camp.

Please note: The acclimatization trek involves a gentle increase in altitude and is crucial for enhancing your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro while mitigating the risk of altitude sickness. It's important to take these hikes seriously.

While the climb itself is technically straightforward, the high altitude can make even simple physical tasks feel challenging. To ensure your safety and well-being, each pair of climbers will be accompanied by a personal guide throughout the ascent. This allows for closer monitoring of both physical and mental conditions. Upon reaching Uhuru Peak, you have the option to descend to the nearest glacier before returning to Barafu Camp. After a 2-hour rest, you'll continue your descent to Millennium Camp.
